THE BENEFITS OF PRAISE AND RECOGNITION
Be honest, when was the last time you acknowledged a good job done by someone else in your company? We’ve recently been working with a number of wonderful teams and there seems to be a theme emerging. Companies, bosses, team mates whatever, we are not great at acknowledging achievement or providing positive feedback to those around us. In a business when it’s not given freely or regularly, it encourages individuals to seek it out.
The best way of describing what happens is this:-
Imagine if you were on an airplane and the cabin pressure was low. There was a limited supply of oxygen and only 50 % of the oxygen masks were working. You literally have to fight to get the air to breath. It’s a dramatic and strong example but in a company where the supply of praise and recognition is tempered the fight for recognition between coworkers begins. It becomes less about creating great ideas and innovations together and more about being the one who gets seen or heard.
Consider your employees as the seedlings and your company as the greenhouse. Would you block out the light or stop watering them? Of course not !i Well we really believe that praise and recognition can help people and companies grow. What’s more, it costs nothing but a “thank you” or a “well done”. Never underestimate the power of praise and give it freely across the organisation whenever you can. It really is breath of fresh air.
